Los Mulatos de Esmeraldas

Detail of a painting completed in 1599 by Adrián Sánchez Galque, of the Quito School, showing Francisco de la Aroba, a leader from the coastal town of Esmeraldas in the region that is now Ecuador. He was part of a community of escaped African former slaves who lived among indigenous people in a once-autonomous village in the Pacific coast of South America which had recently come under Spanish rule. The man is wearing European clothing as well as gold jewelry characteristic of the indigenous communities where he had made his home.
At the Museo de América in Madrid, Spain.
